Our achievement

Another Achievement for PMI Karachi Pakistan Chapter.

My journey to Leadership Institute which started from Las Vegas in September 2007 and entered into its second phase at Orlando in March 2008, finally reached its 3rd and Final phase at Denver on 14th October 2008.

Now when I look back, I find this journey full of excitement, experience and knowledge.

The session started with a brief from each participant to share his personal growth experience since last session. The main areas covered in this session were about Personal Risk Control, inspiring leadership in others and developing Leadership Culture.

The most important part of this session was about Leadership Culture.

There are five levels of leadership

  1. Position leader- by virtue of position/appointment
  2. Leader by relationship-developing personal relation while leading
  3. Leader by result- such leaders give a vision of the result
  4. Leader by people development-mentoring
  5. Leader sincere to cause who devote to mentoring, coaching, helping-gain loyalty

Let me quote Olin-the Instructor who defined Leadership Culture as it follows.
"A Leadership Culture is a culture or vision for a culture, in which every person is expected to be and encouraged to be a leader in something at every point in his or her career."

"Leadership is a role, management is a position. Therefore an organization can have an infinite number of leaders, while it has only a few management positions".

"Leadership Influence or leadership power that creates level 4 and level 5 leaders is earned. Management power is position power (level 1 leader). Leadership power that is seized instead of earned limits a leader's growth to level 3".

The session was followed by 3 day Leadership Institute meeting. The Class was awarded Graduation certificate on the Fist Day of Leadership Institute Meeting.

The class did not end with the award of Graduation certificate but it was followed by a Teleconferencing and a One-on-One session with Laura-the lady Insrucor.

Some of the sentences which still echoes in my mind are:

"Team ego is above individual ego"

" Your boss and your colleagues/ peers are your First team, the people you lead are your Second team- you are required to be more loyal to your First team"

At the end of Final session I submitted my Personal Growth Assessment as under:

  1. I know my MVS, others' MVS, my conflict zone and others' conflict zone.
  2. I am a better communicator now
  3. I now know different levels of Leadership and can aspire for higher level
  4. I know the power of Empowerment which can give miraculous results.
  5. I understand Leadership Culture.

Message from PMI Component Mentor Volunteer for Asia
(Region 9 & 11)

As the 2006-2007 PMI Component Mentor Volunteer for, Asia (Region 9 & 11), and beyond my exposure to various chapters in North America and globally it is my duty and great honor to speak up for an exceptionally versatile and high-caliber volunteer leadership I have come across. PMI Karachi Pakistan chapter (PMI-KPC) is the youngest in my region (and one of the youngest globally), but they proved to be a fast cat and one of the most dynamic globally. Beyond my Component Mentor capacity, I am a charter member of this chapter since 2005 and had the privilege to involve in various activities. I truly admire their initiative in sharing their mentoring initiative in Pakistan and throughout our region.

I have rarely seen this much passion in PMI Community and I would like to sincerely thank PMI-ISSIG for showcasing as role model globally by recognizing PMI-KPC chapter and its key passionate volunteer leader Fawzia Salahuddin. We look forward to more and more such collaborations and such initiatives in Asian region through your esteemed PMI ISSIG..

Warm regards,
Saji

Message from Sanjay Swarup,
Director (Component Affairs), PMI-ISSIG

I am very pleased to share with you two success stories of our Component Affairs team. Both stories were taking place last year several thousand miles apart but with striking similarities.

Mentoring Program at Washington DC Chapter :

Inspite of several years of resistance, Vikas Sharma made in-roads in the Chapter, planned a pilot mentoring program and spearheaded implementation some time middle of the year. See details attached with photographs.

.Mentoring Framework Program at Karachi, Pakistan Chapter :

Fawzia Salahuddin met ISSIG team at PMI Global Congress – Asia Pacific in Hong Kong last year. She established an IS LIG at the Chapter, with full cooperation from the Chapter officials. Fawzia informed me that her Mentoring project is being treated as an implementation project with three main objectives. 1) Implementation of pilot project with end date for completion December 31, 2007. 2) Setting up of a program to run on a six month basis with each mentoring level being treated as a project with first program to launch at start of 2008 and 3) to have in place a documented mentoring manual for use by PMI Karachi, and potentially other chapters. See details attached with photographs.

ISSIG recognizes outstanding contributions made by Vikas and Fawzia in setting-up mentoring programs for their entire Chapter memberships and showcasing ISSIG. Please help me in congratulating Vikas and Fawzia on their resounding success and brilliant achievement.

I hope we all can leverage on these two programs to establish more similar programs in other key chapters globally.
